Martyn's Law is expected to come into force in spring 2027, and cannot be enforced before April 2027. When Does Martyn's Law Come Into Effect? Timeline and Latest Updates

For the full legal background, see our Martyn's Law explained overview.

Why spring 2027?

The Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025 received Royal Assent on 3 April 2025. The government committed to an implementation period of at least 24 months from that date, so the duties cannot be enforced before April 2027. Until commencement there is no legal compliance deadline, but organisations are expected to use the time to prepare.

What is the SIA consultation?

The Security Industry Authority (SIA), the regulator, consulted on draft guidance setting out how it will carry out its role. It has said it intends to take a "support first" approach, focusing on guidance and helping organisations comply before formal enforcement. It also plans to publish practical information on how and when responsible persons should notify the SIA that they are in scope. Follow the SIA's collection of Martyn's Law updates for announcements.

Is there a grace period after it starts?

The implementation period is the preparation window before commencement. Organisations should not assume a further grace period once the duties are in force, although the SIA has signalled that it will act proportionately and give organisations the chance to respond before taking formal action.

Does the date differ in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland?

No. The Act applies across the whole UK, so the same commencement date applies.

What should you do before spring 2027?

  1. Check whether you are in scope and which tier applies: see Standard vs Enhanced Tier.
  2. Work through the steps in how to comply with Martyn's Law.
  3. Put training and records in place early, so evidence builds up naturally.
  4. Check GOV.UK periodically for the confirmed commencement date, because dates can be adjusted.

Preparing now spreads the effort over months, rather than forcing rushed decisions close to enforcement.
